“Good morning. Are you checking out?”
“I need you to call the police.”
Her smile vanished.
She took me into a private office and locked the door behind us.
I expected questions.
Judgment.
Perhaps even pity.
Instead, she handed me a glass of water and said:
“You are safe here.”
Those four words nearly broke me.
Two detectives arrived twenty minutes later.
I told them everything.
The bar.
The wine.
The hotel room.
The missing phone.
The photographs.
I did not hide the fact that I had gone upstairs willingly.
One of the detectives, a woman named Claire Morgan, listened without interrupting.
When I finished, she leaned forward.
“You did not commit a crime, Evelyn. He did.”
She examined the photograph with the mirror reflection.
“You were right. There was an accomplice.”
Hotel security footage showed Julian entering the building with a blonde woman several hours before he approached my table.
The woman had later used a service elevator to reach our floor.
She had entered the room with a key card registered to a housekeeping employee who had reported it missing two weeks earlier.
The detectives also discovered that Julian was not his real name.
His name was Marcus Vale.
He had used at least four other identities.
And I was not his first victim.
