The Day I Returned to the Hospital
Six months after the day I discovered the truth, I returned to the hospital.
Not because Emily was sick.
Not because Ben had another emergency.
I came because I wanted to thank the people who had helped my family.
Arnold saw me first.
He smiled.
“Sarah.”
I hugged him.
“Thank you.”
He looked embarrassed.
“For what?”
“For telling me the truth.”
He shook his head.
“I just thought you deserved to know.”
I looked toward the hallway where I had once stood holding a lunch bag, terrified and confused.
“I did.”
A nurse approached.
“Is Ben here?”
I smiled.
“He’s in surgery.”
The nurse smiled back.
“Of course he is.”
I laughed.
Then I looked toward the pediatric wing.
Emily was doing better.
Her treatment was continuing.
Her doctors were hopeful.
And our family was learning how to live with uncertainty without letting it tear us apart.
