"LET'S KEEP THIS SIMPLE TODAY," MY HUSBAND SAID, WALKING INTO OUR DIVORCE HEARING WITH HIS MISTRESS ON HIS ARM — HE HAD NO IDEA MY ATTORNEY WAS ABOUT TO OPEN A BLUE FOLDER THAT WOULD END HIS ENTIRE FUTURE

"I'm okay."

"That's not what I asked."

"I'm ready."

Desmond was already outside the courthouse, Odalys beside him under a large umbrella, cream coat, her hand on his arm like they were arriving somewhere celebratory instead of at the end of his marriage.

He looked at my stomach, then my face. "Let's keep this simple today."

"I'd like that."

Odalys offered a careful smile. "I hope after today we can all move forward."

"So do I," I said, and meant every layer of it.

---

Priyanka was waiting inside with a thick blue folder on the table. Desmond's eyes caught on it for half a second before he looked away.

His attorney opened by describing his proposed settlement as reasonable. Desmond looked relaxed — he probably believed I'd take whatever ended things fastest.

Then Priyanka stood. "My client is prepared to proceed with the divorce, Your Honor, but there's a serious issue concerning Mr. Ashgrove's financial disclosures."

His shoulders stiffened. His attorney objected. Priyanka stayed calm. "We have documentation of assets and business interests omitted from the original disclosure."

"What kind of business interests?" the judge asked.

"An entity called Ashland Cortez Holdings."

Desmond went still. Odalys turned to look at him — that small reaction told me everything. He'd believed that name would never be spoken in this room.

---

Priyanka laid it out: property documents, account statements, transfers, corporate filings, emails — a paper trail requiring far more explanation than Desmond had given.

"Mr. Ashgrove, what is your relationship to this company?"

"I have interests in several investment entities."

"Ashland Cortez specifically."

His attorney tried to object. The judge raised a hand. "I'd like him to answer."

Desmond hesitated. For years, hesitation had been mine — hesitating to question him, to believe what I saw, afraid of destroying our family. Now he was the one searching for words.

"It's a private investment structure."

"One that received transfers in the months immediately before the divorce filing?"

Silence. Odalys slowly slid her hand off his arm.

---

Then Priyanka displayed the emails. One, between Desmond and Odalys: Once Marisol signs, we can move everything where it belongs.

Odalys stared at the screen. "You said that account had nothing to do with the divorce."

He whispered something to her. She pulled away. "You told me everything was already separated."
