“Because I thought I was going to lose you.”

Caleb sat down slowly.
Clara looked frightened now, as though she had revealed something she had promised herself never to say.
“I know what this marriage was supposed to be,” she whispered. “I know what we agreed.”
“Clara…”
“But somewhere along the way, it stopped feeling like an arrangement.”

“When you ride away, I listen for you to come back.”
