I watched only part.
Adrian and Vanessa standing before cameras after the ceremony.
A reporter asked Adrian why the wedding had happened so quietly given his previous marriage.
He smiled.
Not uncomfortable.
Not guilty.
Confident.
“Our lives have been moving in different directions for years.”
Then something about finally choosing the woman who understood him.
I stopped the video.
My chest physically hurt.
Not metaphorically.
The surgery incision made crying almost impossible.
So I didn’t.
I asked Lily:
“Do you know where my father’s estate documents are?”
“Yes.”
“The prenup?”
“Yes.”
“My separate-share agreements?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
“Call the family attorney.”
“Tell him no money moves tomorrow without my approval.”
Lily went silent.
“Claire, you almost died.”
“I know.”
“You are barely awake.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you talking about board controls?”
Because the woman who entered Willowcrest Medical Center still believed there would be time later.
The woman who woke up knew better.
“Because Adrian thought I was weak enough to ignore.”
“And perhaps sick enough not to matter.”
“I need to know what else he did while I wasn’t looking.”
Lily arrived the next morning carrying two things.
Flowers.
And a thick folder.
I pointed toward the flowers.
“Who sent those?”
“Me.”
“Good.”
“I was going to throw them away if they were from Adrian.”
She almost smiled.
Then placed the folder beside me.
“We have a problem.”
I opened it slowly.
Lily had spent most of the night with the family attorney and an outside forensic accountant.
The first thing they found involved my inherited property outside Bellmere.
My father had left me that estate years before.
Separate property.
Protected by trust documents and our prenup.
Yet three months earlier, Adrian had used it as part of the collateral package supporting a business loan.
Ten million dollars.
My stomach tightened.
“I never signed this.”
“I know.”
“Where did the money go?”
Lily flipped a page.
A corporation.
Then another.
An offshore account.
Beneficiary:
A company tied to Vanessa Cole.
I stared.
“How much?”
“Ten million from this facility.”
