For two years, I watched my daughter come home smaller after every cruel day at school. Then she became ill, and the same classmates who'd made her miserable suddenly filled her hospital room. I wanted to believe they'd changed — until I learned Claire had been hiding something from me too.
"Do you really have no idea what she did?"
Rocky said it quietly.
Outside my daughter's hospital room, I could hear Claire laughing with classmates who had made her life miserable for two years.
Rocky had been one of the worst. Now his face was pale, his phone shaking in his hand.
"Do you really have no idea what she did?"
"What did she do?" I asked.
He glanced at Claire's door.
"We promised we'd never tell."
"Then why are you telling me?"
"Because she keeps protecting us."
His voice cracked.
"We promised we'd never tell."
"And she shouldn't have to do that from a hospital bed."
He unlocked his phone.
"Watch this."

The video started.
I lasted three seconds before I had to grab the back of a chair.
But to explain why, I have to go back to the week Claire got sick.
He unlocked his phone.
