She looked toward the darkening sky.

Caleb tightened the saddle strap.
“There’s something I need to find out.”
“What?”
He could not look at her.
“Caleb.”
“I’ll explain when I return.”
Something in his voice frightened her.
“Is this about Silas?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
He pulled himself into the saddle.
Clara grabbed the bridle.
“You’re not leaving like this.”
“I have to.”
“No, you don’t.”
“Clara.”
