The words came harder than she intended.

Caleb stared down at her.
Before he could answer, a gunshot cracked through the dark.
The horse reared.
Clara screamed.
Caleb fell from the saddle.
For one terrible second, everything became confusion.
The frightened horse.
Dust.
The echo rolling across the pasture.
Caleb landed hard, one hand gripping his side.
Clara dropped beside him.
“Caleb!”
“I’m all right.”
Blood spread across his shirt.
“No, you are not.”
“The bullet grazed me.”
“You are bleeding.”
