“You don’t belong at the family table,” my sister sneered before yanking my chair away.

“Problem solved.”

I watched the pieces fall onto the white tablecloth.

Then I smiled.

“Those were copies.”

The entire ballroom went silent.

“My lawyer has the originals,” I continued. “And so does the lender’s fraud department.”

My father slowly sank back into his chair.

Vanessa stared at me.

Then Daniel reached for the microphone again.

## Part 3

Daniel lifted the microphone.

When he spoke, his voice was quiet.

“The truth is, Vanessa built our marriage on a lie.”

Gasps moved through the ballroom.

“She told me Hawthorne House belonged to her. She told me she controlled the company. And she told me Claire was a bitter employee trying to extort her own family.”

Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.

“You said you loved me.”

Daniel looked at her.

“I loved the woman I thought you were.”

Then he removed a folded document from inside his jacket.

Their marriage license.

It hadn’t been signed.

“I found the lender emails yesterday,” he explained. “I delayed signing because I needed to know whether Claire was telling me the truth.”

Vanessa turned toward me.

“You ruined this!”

“No,” I replied. “I protected what you tried to take.”
